School Committee candidate Caroom seeks to improve and preserve the school system

May 5, 2023

I am writing to request your support and your vote to join the School Committee for the town of Harvard. I am a relatively new member of the community, arriving in 2017. I am running for School Committee to do my part to help preserve and improve the school system that brought our family to Harvard.

Two of my three children graduated from Bromfield in 2021 and one is now a junior. Their involvement in academics, athletics, student government, and a multitude of other clubs has allowed our family to interact with the teachers and administrators in the school system and with the community.

If elected, the areas and policies I would like to explore are:

• Support for Harvard educators. I understand there are fiscal constraints, and keeping the school budget within guidelines imposed by the town budget is one of the most important tasks of the School Committee. I hope the current contract negotiations will soon be resolved, and that as contract negotiations finalize, we do all we can to preserve and repair the relationship we have with our teachers.

• De-leveling of classes at Bromfield. I do not support de-leveling of classes, but also think we need to ensure the same educational environment is present throughout all levels of instruction (college prep, honors, advanced placement) and that students can move easily between all levels of instruction versus being stuck in a singular track. I also recognize that curriculum implementation is the responsibility of the school administration. At a minimum any curriculum shifts merit open communication with teachers, students, and parents.

• Examining pandemic policies. Ensuring that as we transition out of COVID, all of the necessary changes enacted to navigate the pandemic—especially technology accommodations—are carefully considered for future necessity.

Regardless of who you vote for, please be sure to vote and support our School Committee.
