Alert Trojan defense and busy bats contain Narragansett Warriors in next-to-last game of baseball season

With a decisive 14-4 win against Narragansett Regional Monday afternoon, May 13, the Bromfield baseball squad is assured of a top spot in the Central Mass. playoffs, set to begin May 21.

The game was a near mirror image of the 12-2 defeat Bromfield had suffered Friday, May 10, against Tahanto, in which an explosion of six runs by the Stags in the second inning gave Tahanto a 7-2 lead from which Bromfield never recovered. Bromfield scored twice in the first inning but was scoreless for the rest of the game. Tahanto’s starter, Jamie McNamara, pitched all seven innings and allowed only four hits and one earned run. Bromfield’s two runs were scored by starting pitcher Bode Lee-
Feinberg and left-fielder Zachary Lizotte.

The game against Narragansett was an entirely different ballgame. “We played fairly well against ’Gansett,” wrote Coach Lonnie Quirion in an email to the Press. “Our team defense was very good and we had contributions from most of the lineup.”

Lee-Feinberg led the way with four hits, two of them doubles, in five at-bats. Third baseman and relief pitcher Nate Pertoso had two hits in four times at bat, one of which was a double. Pertoso scored one run and drove in four, the most RBIs of the afternoon.

Because of MIAA pitch count rules, the team’s starting pitchers weren’t eligible, Quirion said, so Brady Quirion and Pertoso split the game on the mound. “Brady had a rough first inning before settling down and pitching into the fourth inning,” Quirion reported. Pertoso relieved him early in the fourth inning, allowing only one run in the remaining two innings. Together they held the Warriors to three hits and one home run.

Coach Quirion had praise for two freshmen, substitute catcher Michael Greene and third baseman Liam Morton, who also contributed to Monday’s win. Greene played catcher while Quirion pitched, throwing out two runners while batting in two runs on a double. Morton stepped in to play third base while Pertoso pitched. He struck out his single time at bat but contributed a sacrifice bunt.

The team is currently in third place among the eight schools of the Midland-Wachusett League, with a 10-5 win-loss record, and is ranked 12th by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association among the 73 schools across the state in Division 5. The team was scheduled to play its final game of the season at home against Maynard on Wednesday, May 15.
