Sobalvarro would bring significant skills to board

October 30, 2009

I am writing in support of Marie Sobalvarro for the Board of Selectmen. As a member of the Harvard Community Preservation Committee I have seen the wonderful projects that can be undertaken with Community Preservation Fund grants. Unfortunately the economic recession means that Harvard’s share of statewide CPC funds will be severely reduced, as will local aid from the state. It is very important that we elect someone who understands the fiscal situation of our town and has the knowledge and experience to develop creative solutions to these revenue shortfalls. I believe Marie Sobalvarro fits that description.

With an MBA and experience in health insurance consulting, Marie played a vital role as the only citizen on the task force charged with looking at health insurance for town employees, a critical issue at 10 percent of our budget and a key item in union contract negotiations. This service is in addition to her three-plus years on the Finance Committee. Marie’s quiet intelligence and personable style have contributed significantly to the work of these groups. She is a skilled collaborator who, if elected, will bring her personal and professional skills to the board. She also understands and appreciates the needs of our schools as only a parent with school-age children can.

As we go forward in these uncertain times, I know that Marie will bring new and significant additions to the skill sets of our current Board of Selectmen. I will be voting for her in the upcoming election.
