Kevin Sun and Tyler Brandom of Harvard are among 10 area youths who have qualified to attend the Billiard Education Foundation Junior National 9-Ball Championships in DeKalb, Ill., in July. To qualify, the boys won a local qualifying event at the Billiards Café in Ayer. This was followed by Sun winning the Massachusetts 15- to 18-year-old championship and Brandom winning the Massachusetts 14-and-under title. Sun and Brandom also won their divisions in the Connecticut state championship.
Shirley residents Juli and Andy Poutry, grandchildren of Harvard resident David Poutry, have also qualified. The BEF Junior National 9-Ball Championships is the most prestigious junior billiard event in North America. Players will be competing for academic scholarships, prizes, and an opportunity to represent the United States at the 2011 World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World Junior 9-Ball Championships in Kielce, Poland.
