How lucky are we to live in Harvard! The town has and supports TWO exceptional high schools: Bromfield School and Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School. Recently, the Annual Town Meeting members unanimously passed the school budget, funding both institutions. Additionally, the TM members created a stabilization fund for Monty Tech. This request, explained by Superintendent Steve Sharek and Finance Manager Tammy Lajoie, will provide a safety net for “unexpected and unplanned expenses” which would not be allowed under the town’s stabilization fund.
This successful vote proves that Harvard values this educational institution and takes seriously its responsibility to support it.
The 26th Annual Superintendent’s Dinner for Monty Tech last week was another moment of great success. The event raised 100 percent of its funds for student scholarship.
This was a great team effort! All staff and students contributed above and beyond, to a sellout crowd including every corner of the community. This was a stellar event! Staff assisted in directing students, who created props and displays, costumes, posters, programs and the sculpted ice bar and complete menu. Most importantly, the courtesy and professionalism of the students and staff were evident throughout the evening.
How does one judge the quality of a school? MCAS scores, dropout rates, SAT scores and graduation rates can all be evaluated. Monty Tech compares favorably with all other schools in these areas. Or a school can be put to a big test: assign a major task, ask the community to work together, allot a deadline, and set high expectations. Results will show if the school has a heart, a community, a family. This is where Monty Tech excels!
Harvard is fortunate to have two options for the education of its high school students. It is gratifying to see that taxpayers, voters and officials continue to support them both.
