Open burning season has started
Open burning season started last Friday, Jan. 15, and will run until May 1. A valid permit ($10 per year) is required, but even if you hold a permit, the fire chief has the right to deny burning on any day depending on weather or environmental conditions.
Permits may be obtained with a credit card online at harvard.ma.us/Pages/HarvardMA_Fire/burn or with a check or money order in person at Town Hall. A permit number will be assigned and will be required each time you activate the permit during burning season.
Each day you wish to burn, you must activate your permit:
- If the permit was obtained online, log into the permit activation page at http://massfire.net/brush/harvard.php#.
- If the permit was obtained in person, call 978-456-1212 between 9 a.m. and noon on the day you wish to burn and supply your permit number. If you have provided a valid email address, you can activate your permit daily through the online activation page.

Girl Scout cookies available now
Now through March, Harvard Girl Scouts will sell their familiar treats. This year seven varieties of cookies, including the gluten-free Toffee-tastic and many old favorites, are available. The price is still $4 per box. Proceeds help girls fund their troop activities while learning the basics of money management. Look for sales at the Transfer Station in the coming weeks, or ask your neighborhood Brownie or Girl Scout. Property taxes due Feb. 1
Third-quarter real estate and personal property tax payments are due on Monday, Feb. 1. Payments can be mailed, paid online, dropped off at Town Hall during office hours, or placed in the temporary Town Hall dropbox at the old library (7 Fairbank Street) anytime. The secure dropbox is located in the front entryway. To pay online, visit the town website at www.harvard.ma.us.
