Josh Myler, who is currently the associate principal of Hildreth Elementary School, will step up to principal July 1, and this week he announced that Scott Mulcahy will become the new associate principal at HES.
For the past two years, Mulcahy has been assistant principal at Josiah Haynes Elementary School in Sudbury. He grew up in Worcester, attended public schools there, and now lives in West Boylston. He taught for eight years in Hudson—six years as a fifth-grade teacher and then two years as a social studies teacher in middle school. At both schools he did extensive work on curriculum development as well as dealing with a range of technologies.
Among the programs Mulcahy has worked on in his time at the Haynes School is an intergenerational learning program between Sudbury’s elementary schools and the town’s senior center. He also developed a student leadership group and a fifth-grade safety patrol.
Sudbury schools are facing budget cuts that may lead to the elimination of the position that Mulcahy holds. But an online petition to keep him in Sudbury garnered 186 signatures. It reads in part, “He throws footballs with the kids at recess, invites students to play chess in his office, greets them at drop-off in the morning with a smile and a kind word, talks to them in the hallways and encourages them to be at their best, and ends the day at pickup with another smile and wave. … Scott continually goes above and beyond for our students.”
Mulcahy holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and elementary education from Stonehill College, a master’s degree in school psychology from the University of Hartford, and a master’s in school administration from Worcester State College. He is currently working on a doctoral degree in education from Creighton University.
