Bromfield athletes competed in the Midland Wachusett League Division D meet on a damp, windy, and cold afternoon, May 21. With the temperature only in the 40s, the sprinters and field event athletes competed in less than ideal conditions. The girls team took third place while competing with three other teams, and the boys took fourth in a field of five.
Senior Vasilis Psathas cleared 6 feet, good for silver in the boys high jump. Sophomore Sienna Schulz took third in the girls high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 8 inches, while fellow sophomore Laci Ostaszewski cleared 8 feet, 6 inches for silver in the girls pole vault.
The girls 4×800-meter relay took gold with a team of Gabriella Temps, Molly Jackson, Kate Eriksen, and Christina Kekis. Probably the most unexpected result of the day was the boys 4×400-meter relay. Bromfield snagged gold with a team of Christian Johannesen, Mathias Holzmann, Cole Maddalone, and Liam Kemeza.
Other gold medal winners include Evelyn Wool in the girls 2-mile and Ben McWaters in the boys 2-mile. Rosie Bradley and Kai Kemeza won their respective 1-mile races. The 800-meter saw Harrison Binnick and Ben McWaters go second and third in the boys race while Evelyn Wool returned from her victorious 2-mile to take second in the girls 800-meter.
Although the distance runners racked up the most points for Bromfield on both the boys side and the girls side, what was most exciting was the number of young athletes scoring for the team. In fact, all Bromfield competitors in the girls field events are freshmen and sophomores. In addition to Ostaszewski’s second-place pole vault, Ashley Aftosmis placed fourth in javelin and discus.
In the running events, several underclassmen excelled as well. Freshman Julien Legrain advanced to the finals of the boys 100-meter where he dipped below 12 seconds for the first time in his career. Eighth-grader Amelia Kennedy took fourth place in the 200-meter to score points for the team, and freshman Micah Wiebe took third place in the boys 400-meter. Sophomore Katie Boutelle and freshman Piper Candon both scored points by placing fourth and fifth in the 400-meter hurdles, with Katie earning a new personal record in the process, running more than 4 seconds faster than previously.
