The Bromfield Acton-Boxborough girls varsity coxed quad continued to show its speed at the Massachusetts Public Schools Rowing Association’s Fall Championship Regatta in Lowell on Sunday, Oct. 26, winning gold and outpacing the rest of the field by a full minute.
The girls third varsity 8 scored silver, and their teammates on both the boys and girls sides collectively garnered bronze in six events on the 4,200-meter Merrimack River course. The girls varsity double and first varsity 8, the boys first varsity 4, the girls novice double, and the girls and boys first novice 4s were BA-B’s bronze medalists.
Just 147 entries from 13 teams competed; as its name suggests, this regatta is exclusively for public school teams. Coaches reminded athletes to pack spare socks as they would be wet launching from the beach, not boarding their vessels from a dock. A light tail wind and slow current helped propel the boats down the river.
BA-B finished in the middle of the pack for team points. The team was the only one to enter middle school athletes. Two middle school boys quads and one girls quad, coached by Bromfield senior Will Stoddard, logged racing experience.
The regatta marked the end of the fall racing season. Head girls varsity coach Holly Hatton said, “I’ve found the shift in the positive team spirit and camaraderie of all of our athletes a real highlight this season. When we work together, we build respect, confidence, and a sense of belonging that makes us much stronger as individuals and teammates.
Chris Whitbeck, who coaches the novice boys, added, “All the teams showed growth and heart this season. Their progress this year proves how much promise lies ahead. I can’t wait to see how well they do in the spring.”
