The girls varsity lacrosse team faced a challenging week on the field, losing to Westborough on Tuesday, May 6, and to Tyngsborough on Thursday, May 8. With a significant number of players from the starting lineup out of the games due to injuries and school activity conflicts, the team struggled to fill the gaps by moving players out of their normal positions and bringing some junior varsity players up to assist.
On Tuesday, the Trojans played the Westborough Rangers on their home field in the pouring rain. The game was the biggest loss of the season for Bromfield, with an 11-point deficit and a final score of 17-6. Beginning the first quarter down three starters, the Trojans lost a number of draws and made a few mistakes on defense that allowed the Rangers to pull ahead. In the second quarter, Bromfield held strong until another starting player was injured and had to leave the game.

“I knew it was going to be a tough game, given the prior matchup,” said coach Ali Wicks, referring to the 8-point loss to Westborough on April 30. “It was a very difficult loss, but we played through the last whistle. [Junior] Phoebe Cole kept [the Rangers’] top player well under wraps, thankfully.”
Game high scorer, junior Hanna Wicks, had three goals, and goalie, junior Darragh O’Connor, had eight saves.
On Thursday, May 8, the Trojans played another wet-weather game, this time against the Tyngsborough Tigers, and lost 16-9. With five starters absent, three junior varsity players on the field, shuffling other player positions to compensate for the changes, and only one sub, conditions were not ideal for Bromfield. Still, the team managed to hold the Tigers off, but by the end of the third quarter they were fatigued, according to Wicks.
“We played a very tight first half, staying within one point for the entirety,” said Wicks. “Darragh O’Connor had an incredible game, saving multiple goals from [Tyngsborough’s] strongest shooter. Phoebe Cole and Saya Dion held her down on defense as well. We had several players playing in unfamiliar positions and tried our best to overcome the adversity.”
In the end, game high scorer, freshman Kate Wicks, scored four goals, and O’Connor made an impressive 12 saves in the net. The Trojans are currently ranked 16 out of 56 teams in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 4 power rankings. They were scheduled to play Oakmont at McCurdy Track on Tuesday, May 13, and Shrewsbury on Wednesday, May 14. They will face Groton-Dunstable Saturday, May 17, at 3 p.m., also at home.
