The girls varsity basketball team lost in the first round of postseason games to Blackstone-Millville Regional High School, 66-39, on Tuesday, Feb. 25. The Trojans were seeded 33 in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association while the Chargers were 32.
Coach Anne McWaters had hoped for a home-court advantage, given the girls’ MIAA power ranking of 33 (seed rankings are assigned based on performance during the regular season), but having been matched up with the team ranked just one ahead meant the Trojans traveled the hour south to fight for their continued participation in the tournament.
The first half started strong for Bromfield. Senior Jo Camardo sank a 3-pointer to get the Trojans on the board. With one second on the clock, Blackstone-Millville scored a 3-pointer, allowing them to pull ahead by 1 point, ending the quarter with Bromfield down 15-14. By half time, the gap widened to 6 points with the Chargers leading 26-20.
“It was a good first half,” said McWaters. Sophomore Hannah Huelin, game high-scorer with 15 points, nailed two 3-pointers for Bromfield in the third quarter, but it wasn’t enough to hold back the Chargers, who went on a run ending with Bromfield down 43-34.
Before the start of the fourth quarter, McWaters hyped up her team. “You’ve got eight minutes left. Get it back. This is it!” Unfortunately, her pep talk wasn’t enough to save the Trojans from defeat.
“They wanted it more than we did,” said McWaters about Blackstone-Millville. “Number 15 and number three played out of their minds. They usually average about 12 points per game; number three had 27 points this game. They were faster to the loose balls. They were getting the rebounds. I’m still proud of our girls. They fought hard.”
The loss eliminates Bromfield from the playoff tournament, ending their season with 12 wins and six losses.
