The girls varsity basketball team suffered its second loss to Gardner last week 39-52. The Trojans battled more than just the Wildcats at Bromfield on Thursday, Jan 16; cold and flu season proved to be another challenging opponent.

The game started out close, with the lead going back and forth between the teams. The first half ended in a 2-point game, Gardner up 23-21, in large part thanks to game high-scorer, freshman Audrey Burek. The Trojans came out strong in the second half, taking the lead at one point in the third quarter, but, according to head coach Anne McWaters, hit a wall after that.
“My team had gutted through illness for about three-quarters of the game and then it just caught up to us,” said McWaters. “You could see how physically exhausted we were in the fourth [quarter], and Gardner capitalized on that.”
McWaters was proud of her team and said she believes the outcome would have been in their favor had everyone been healthy.
The girls were scheduled to face Narragansett away on Tuesday, Jan 21, and Tahanto at home on Friday, Jan 24. “We’ve got Narragansett, which is the only other team we’ve lost to, and unfortunately we’re still sick,” said McWaters. “It’s going to be a tough one. Alas, that’s life.”
The boys varsity basketball team had just one game last week against Murdock on Tuesday, Jan 14. In the first game of the season that exceeded 100 points, the Trojans beat the Blue Devils 102-25. Coach Tim Skaggs used the game as an opportunity to start all the seniors and even gave senior team manager Hamish Harvey court time, during which he scored. The raucous cheers from the team earned them a technical foul, which they showed no repentance for as they celebrated Harvey’s basket.
The boys were scheduled to play three games this week. Tuesday, Jan 21, they will face Narragansett at home; Wednesday they will play Maimonides School in Brookline; and Friday the Trojans are back home battling Tahanto at 7 p.m.
