The Bromfield boys beat the Pioneer Charter School of Science Panthers 4-1 Wednesday night to advance to the final four of this year’s Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Division 5 state tournament. The Trojans will now face Sutton for the second time this postseason when the two teams meet Monday night in a semifinal match Nov. 18 at Doyle Field in Leominster at 7 p.m.
Wednesday’s night’s game against Pioneer was played on the turf of Ayer’s Norton Field on a frigid but clear evening. Bromfield controlled the ball for most of the first half, but was unable to score, despite a host of opportunities.
Bromfield’s first goal came in the opening minutes of second half on a penalty kick by senior Theo Myles, following a foul on junior Liam Glew inside the Panthers’ penalty area. Less than 10 minutes later, Pioneer senior defender Kelvin Souza found a path to Bromfield’s net to score the Panthers’ only goal and tie the game.
Bromfield finally came alive in the final 10 minutes of the second half, dismantling Pioneer’s defense and scoring an additional three goals to seal the game at 4-1. The first was by sophomore Thomas Sintros who headed a service from senior Theo Myles into the net. Then following a Bromfield timeout, first senior Ethan Russo and then Myles, with an assist from Russo, scored again as time ran out.
When Sutton and Bromfield last met on Oct. 29 to decide who would take home the Central Mass Class C championship trophy, the Sammies won, 2-1. Two years ago, in November 2022, Bromfield beat Sutton 3-1 to win the MIAA Division 5 state championship.
