The boys tennis team got its first taste of state competition this week, beating 28th-seeded Hopedale 3-0 on Friday, May 31, and 12th-seeded Sutton 3-0 on Monday, June 3, in the first two rounds of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Division 4 state tournament.

The two remaining games were called once Bromfield had won three of its five matches.
For first singles player Tim Khuu, Monday’s match was his third against Sutton’s Charlie Marchand. Marchand was the winner the first time they met at the beginning of the season, beating Khuu 6-4, 6-4. In their second match, Khuu got the better of Marchand in three sets—6-3, 4-6, 7-5—regaining momentum after falling behind in the second. In Monday’s round of 16, however, Khuu was in command, using his powerful left-handed forearm to move Marchand corner to corner and creating opportunities to finish their exchanges at the net.
Third singles player Aadi Ravindran and the second doubles team of Andrew Mirarchi and Evan Burek had already wrapped up their matches, and with Bromfield ahead in the remaining two, the Sutton coach elected to cede the contest to Bromfield, bringing it to a close shortly after 4 p.m.
With Sutton vanquished, the sixth-seeded Bromfield boys advanced to the quarterfinals where they were scheduled to play No. 4 seed Hamiton-Wenham at the Pingree School in Hamilton Wednesday afternoon, June 5.
