The Harvard Ski Club has wrapped up another great year at Wachusett Mountain.
Approximately 75 students from Hildreth Elementary School and the Bromfield School traveled by bus to and from the mountain each Wednesday, joined by dozens more students and adults who bought tickets through the Harvard-Wachusett program.
The lodge and lifts were busy each week with enthusiastic skiers and riders, beginners and experts, all enjoying being outside in the fresh air and taking breaks by the fire to warm up. This year conditions were mixed with rain, snow, and fog which did not deter the participants—we are pros at navigating a range of mountain conditions here in Massachusetts.
All of this winter fun depends on the hard work and volunteerism of Harvard residents, school staff, parents, and guardians. This year there is a special shout-out to Anne McWaters and Sam Levine at Harvard Parks and Recreation for working so hard to ensure the students had buses to get them there and back and supporting residents in navigating the Parks and Rec sign-up process. A thank-you as well to Maureen Babcock, who ran this program so smoothly for 10 years and to the parents and guardians, residents, and school staff who came to Wachusett every single week to support the program.
This program cannot operate, per Wachusett policy, without a robust volunteer group and I am happy to report we met our volunteer numbers while also having a blast skiing, boarding, and making new friends.
Each year, Ski Club is open to students and adults who want to ski or snowboard at Wachusett Mountain during the months of January to February. Sign-ups start in November and close in mid-December.
