Sell Bromfield House now

March 22, 2024

Fellow taxpayers: What is happening in the bucolic town of Harvard when five Select Board members can decide not to sell the Bromfield House after two Town Meetings voted to sell it?

The Select Board wants to extend the lease for another year. Some have said that it “doesn’t cost the town anything.” I beg to differ. The town is paying the insurance on the building. The town is losing several hundred thousand as a sale price, which would go to the schools, and several thousand in lost real estate taxes. Also now that lead paint has been found, there will be another expense for remediation for who knows the cost. Do you really think that it will be easier to find a place for the Afghans in a year than it is now with real estate’s outlandish rental prices? I say, No. Put the “For Sale” sign up now.
