Led by Jack Stahl’s first-place victory, members of Bromfield’s indoor track team had a successful meet on Sunday, Jan. 28, at the Massachusetts State Coaches Association Invitational held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston. The Trojans made an impact at the event, breaking personal and school records alike.
Senior runner Stahl won the boys’ 600-meter race with a new personal record and school record of 1 minute, 22.87 seconds, beating second place finisher, Connor Acierno of Nashoba Regional, by 2.24 seconds. This replaces the previous school record that was set 10 years ago by Patrick Griffin. Stahl confidently held first place as he ran far ahead of the other competing runners and straight to the finish line. He said that he has been working hard with his coach, Marisa Steele, practicing more often and more intensely to get a faster time. He told the Press he’s ecstatic with his performance in both the 600-meter and 4×400-meter. “To finally be there is a great feeling, and I still have some chances to get an even faster time,” he said.
The boys’ 4×400-meter relay team of Colin Harte, Liam Kemeza, Harrison Binnick, and Stahl smashed the school indoor record by almost three seconds. Stahl said, “I felt a lot of pressure to do my part, but in the end, it worked out and we destroyed the previous record.” Additionally, Binnick, a sophomore, lowered his personal record for the 1,000-meter by five seconds, running a time of 2:46.33. This ranks him as the fourth fastest 1-kilometer runner in Bromfield’s history.
Setting personal records in both the 55-meter and the 300-meter, junior Wendy Aftosmis was the only girl from Bromfield who competed. Her time of 44.00 seconds in the 300-meter ranks her fourth in Bromfield’s history, while 7.80 for the 55-meter makes her the fifth fastest Bromfield female runner for that event.
In total, Aftosmis ran two events and the boys ran four, with great success in the 600- and 1,000-meter. As the winter track season continues, coach Steele is preparing the team for big meets that are coming up. The next league meet is scheduled to take place Sunday, Feb. 4, at Boston’s Reggie Lewis track.
