Gardening talk
On Friday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m., Warner Free Lecture and the Garden Club of Harvard will present John Hanson Mitchell discussing “Gardening in the Age of Climate Change” at Volunteers Hall at the public library, 4 Pond Road.
Mitchell founded the Massachusetts Audubon Society’s journal “Sanctuary” and has written 10 books including “Ceremonial Times: Fifteen Thousand Years on One Square Mile.” Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; refreshments will follow the talk. For more details visit warnerfreelecture.org.
Historical Society open house
The Harvard Historical Society will host the first in a series of winter Sunday openings at the meetinghouse, 215 Still River Road, on Sunday, Jan. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. The next two will be Feb. 11 and March 10. The openings will be an opportunity for visitors to view the society’s permanent collections, including Shaker items, portraits, household items, and hand-painted signs from businesses and public buildings around the Common. Volunteers from the society will be on hand to answer questions and to point out recent acquisitions to the collections. Children are welcome.
K of C supper
The Knights of Columbus are holding their curbside community supper on Saturday, Jan. 20, at St Theresa Church, 15 Still River Road. Orders are due by Jan. 15. Winter fun run and 5K
The Running to Class 1-mile fun run and 5K through the center of town take place Sunday, Jan. 28, at noon, at the Bromfield School. This is a self-timed event for walkers and runners of all ages. There will be hot chocolate after the race. Learn more and sign up at tinyurl.com/4a8md4e6.
Jazz Night at Bromfield
The fourth annual jazz night will be held at the Bromfield School cafeteria, from 6:30 to 9 p.m, Friday Feb. 2, featuring Bromfield Middle School and High School jazz ensembles, with a headline performance by Dan Gabel and the Abletones Detect Band. Tickets are $10 for students and $20 for adults, with a $50 family cap and are available at fanfareformusic.org, or at the door. There will be raffle prizes and complimentary food and drinks. Proceeds benefit music programs in the Harvard schools.

Outdoor exploration for children
The Nashua River Watershed Association will host a free program, “Animals of the Forest Tracks and Signs,” Saturday, Jan. 13, at Greeley Park, Nashua, New Hampshire, from 1 to 3 p.m. The program is suitable for children ages 6 to 13 and their families. Free skating
There will be free ice skating at the Oval Ice Skating Rink, 455 Main Street, Worcester, on Jan. 15, 1 to 6 p.m.; Jan. 26, 5 to 9 p.m.; Jan. 27 and 28, 1 to 6 p.m.; and Feb. 16, 5 to 9 p.m.. Complimentary skate rentals will be available to children ages 12 and younger.
