Inventor, avid traveler, co-founder of Sepracor

Stephen Matson of Harvard died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023, at the age of 74. Stephen was a chemical engineer, entrepreneur, inventor, professor, adventurer, and loving grandfather.
Stephen received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cornell University and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He co-founded the Marlborough-based pharmaceutical company Sepracor Inc. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1995 for his achievements as an inventor of new membrane technologies. An avid traveler who had climbed mountains around the world, he loved exploring Acadia National Park with his family every summer.
Stephen is survived by his wife of 51 years, Stella; his son, Jeffrey Matson and wife Megan McIntyre; his daughter, Sara Griffin and husband Patrick Griffin; as well as by his grandsons, Oliver, Ryan, and Eric.
Donations can be made in his memory to the National Academy of Engineering or to the Friends of Acadia.
