Bromfield’s boys and girls soccer and cross-country teams were deep into their postseasons as this edition of the Press was being prepared, with critical matchups scheduled for the remainder of this week.
Having lost their championship match last week to No. 1 seed and longtime rival Sutton in the Central Massachusetts Class C finals, Bromfield boys soccer players are looking for redemption as the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association 2023 Division 5 championships get underway. The third-seeded boys, state champions for the past five years, won their first match in the series against 35th-seeded Atlantis Charter, 5-2, Nov. 5. (See story on page 15.) As this edition of the Press was being written, the boys were preparing for a round of 16 game on Wednesday, Nov. 8, against No. 14 seed Mystic Valley Regional Charter.
The 18th-seeded girls soccer players won their MIAA 2023 Division 5 round of 32 match against No. 14 seed Mystic Valley Regional Charter in an away game Monday night, Nov. 6. Their upcoming round of 16 match promised to be a tough one as the team got ready to face off against No. 2 seed Monson in an away game Wednesday afternoon.
For the boys and girls cross-country teams, the results of the upcoming MIAA Division 3 state qualifiers will determine whether each team will race as a team at the Nov. 18 state meet at Devens, and, if a team fails to qualify, who among its runners will can compete as individuals. Both teams won their Mid-Wach C championship meets this year.
The field hockey players, ranked 31 among the 32 qualifying teams of their division, advanced to the MIAA Division 5 state tournament but were eliminated in their round of 32 match, losing to No. 2 seed Manchester-Essex in an away match last Thursday, Nov. 2.
Finally, it’s worth repeating the news that Bromfield’s golf players are the 2023 Mid-Wach C league champions. Although the Trojans did not qualify for the MIAA Division 3 state tournament, the team placed fourth among 12 competing teams at the Central Mass. sectional meet at Kettle Brook Golf Club in Paxton, and two of its players, Evan Piekos and Noah Petrossi, came within three strokes of qualifying as individuals, tying for 11th place among the 77 players at the Oct. 24 event.
