Sports Roundup: March 3, 2023

March 3, 2023

The past week was a time of postseason winter championships. Swimming and indoor track were over, while the boys and girls basketball teams were finishing up their sectional and state championship matches. The co-op ice hockey and Alpine ski teams were getting ready for end-of-season playoffs that were scheduled for the middle of this week, too late for this edition of the paper.

Alpine skiing

As this week’s roundup was being written, five Bromfield skiers, members of the Bay West Alpha Division boys and girls ski teams, were preparing for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Alpine state championship: Oscar Pride, Andrew Brown, Cole Maddalone, Oscar Brown, and Libby Bassage. The meet was postponed until March 1 to allow a late-winter snowstorm to contribute to the Berkshire East Mountain Resort course where the event is to be held.

Ice hockey

The Littleton/Bromfield/Parker boys ice hockey team beat back opponents to win the Central Massachusetts Athletic Directors Association Class C championship and were headed to a March 1 round of 32 match against Ashland in this year’s MIAA Division 4 Championship (see story on page 13).

Basketball

With its winning season, the boys varsity basketball team made it into the first rounds of both Central Massachusetts and MIAA championship playoffs, but they were unable to advance. The girls did not make it to the state championship this year and finished their season Feb. 22 with a final CMADA Class C game against Oxford.

Indoor track

Four members of the boys indoor track team, having qualified in the previous week’s MIAA Division 4 state championship, raced in the MIAA Meet of Champions Feb. 26 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Senior Sam Secor placed ninth in the 600-meter race with a time of 1 minute, 24.44 seconds. (Andover senior Neil Chowdhury won with a time of 1:23.06.) The 4×800-meter relay team of Secor, ninth-graders Liam Kemeza and Christian Johannesen, and junior Jack Stahl placed 19th with a time of 8:28.55. (Newton North won with a time of 7:57.84.)
