The timing of the 2023 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association state swimming and indoor track tournaments was not the best, coinciding as it did with the winter break. Both Bromfield teams lost several of their best athletes to family vacations and service projects.
Indoor track
At the MIAA Division 5 Indoor Track and Field championships held Feb. 16 at Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, the boys 4×800-meter relay team consisting of junior Jack Stahl, senior Samuel Secor, and ninth-graders Christian Johannesen and Liam Kemeza placed second with a time of 8 minutes, 28.51 seconds. In the 600-meter race Stahl placed fourth (1:24.01) and Secor fifth (1:24.05), new personal bests for both.
Stahl and Secor and the relay team qualified for the MIAA All-States championship and will race this coming Tuesday in that event.
Missing three of its top runners, the Bromfield girls team entered only one of 13 events. The girls team’s lone representative was sophomore Isabel Jackson, who placed 24th in the 600-meter race, shaving six seconds off her personal best with a time of 1:5177.
Swimming and diving
Sophomore Vance Petrossi—Bromfield’s single entry in this year’s MIAA Division 2 championship—was the only Bromfield swimmer to medal, placing second among 22 racers in the 100-yard breaststroke and ninth among 19 in the 100-yard freestyle race.
The girls 4×400-yard freestyle relay team of Charlotte Miling, Lilly Blouin, Gracie Hanss, and Ella Bergeron, came in 14th out of 21, with a personal best of 3:58.35.
Alpine skiing
After a spate of postponements early in the season, the Massachusetts Bay West Alpha Division to which the Bromfield/North Middlesex skiers belong, was able to complete all six races—three giant slalom and three slalom races—just before the season’s end on Feb. 17. The boys Alpine team emerged as the Alpha Division champion, having won all but one of its races. The girls team finished in seventh place with a season record of 28 losses to 20 wins in the six nine-team events of the season.
The top Alpha boy is North Middlesex’s Noah Bagley. He and six teammates will compete in next Tuesday’s MIAA Alpine ski tournament at Berkshire East in Charlemont. Four of his teammates are from Bromfield: Oscar Pride, Andrew Brown, Cole Maddalone, and Oscar Brown.
Bromfield skier Libby Bassage was the only Alpha girl to qualify for the state championship.

Girls swimming (7-0, 10-0)
- 2/18 MIAA Division 2 championship. Bromfield entered six of 12 events and finished 26th among the 38 competing schools. Junior Ella Bergeron narrowly missed finishing among the top 10 in two events: She was 11th in the 100-yard backstroke and 12th in the 100-yard freestyle. This year’s MIAA Division 2 champion is Marblehead.

- 2/16 MIAA Division 5 state championship. Bromfield entered four of 13 events and placed 11th among the 39 schools. Littleton won the event and is the MIAA Division 5 champion.

Girls indoor track (3-1, 3-1)
- 2/16 MIAA Division 5 state championship. Sophomore Isabel Jackson was Bromfield’s sole entry. She placed 24th in the 600-meter race with a time of 1:51.77. Weston won the event, outpacing 39 schools to capture the 2023 MIAA Division 5 title.
