Basketball: The basketball postseason gets underway next week with the start of the Central Massachusetts Athletic Directors Association playoffs. Both the boys and girls teams are guaranteed two games in either tournament or nonplayoff competition. Results count toward each team’s season record and will be used to determine who qualifies for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Association Division 5 state tournament.
The boys team with its winning 12-5 record qualified for this year’s CMADA Class C tournament and will play #1 Class C seed Clinton (13-3) on Monday, Feb. 20, at Clinton High School.
While the two schools share similar season records, Clinton is a Massachusetts Interscholastic Association Division 4 team, where it ranks fifth among 64 schools. Bromfield, the No. 8 Class C seed, belongs to Division 5, where it ranks 44th among 91 schools. Despite their very different schedules, the two schools find themselves in the same playoff class because of their similar enrollments and geographic proximity. They will meet for the first time this year in next week’s quarterfinals. If Bromfield loses, the team will play a consolation game against another Class C school.
The girls team did not qualify for this year’s tournament but will play two nonplayoff games, the first against Blackstone-Millville Regional Feb. 17 and the second against Oxford Feb. 22.
Swimming and diving: At the MIAA Central/West sectional last weekend at Springfield College, the girls team placed seventh among 27 schools, with Bromfield athletes placing among the top 10 finishers in several individual and team events. Lily Tonole was Bromfield’s top scorer, winning the 1-meter dive and earning 20 points for her team. Vance Petrossi was top swimmer among the boys, winning fourth place in the 100-yard freestyle race.
Tonole and five other Bromfield girls will compete in this weekend’s MIAA Division 2 state finals at MIT, including the 200-yard medley relay team of Ella Bergeron, Sierra Quinty, Lilly Blouin, and Gracie Hanss; the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Blouin, Charlotte Miling, Hanss, and Bergeron; Bergeron in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke; Hanss in the 500-yard freestyle; and Quinty in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Among the boys, Vance Petrossi qualified for the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle.
