I am happy to read that the Select Board voted to raise the senior tax work-off hourly rate to $12. But the article left me with questions. Why not raise the rate to match the Massachusetts minimum wage, as is allowed in MGL Part I; Title IX; Chapter 59, Section 5K? The law also allows a town to vote to adjust “the maximum reduction of the real property tax bill to be based on 125 volunteer service hours in a given tax year, rather than $1,500.” What is the process to do this and is there interest? Is there a system in place to ensure that the rate is adjusted at regular intervals?
Shouldn’t we pay our very competent seniors a fair wage?
