The girls soccer team lost its Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 5 “sweet sixteen” match to No. 4 seed Douglas at Millbury on Nov. 11, ending the young team’s quest for a state title. The game was tied 0-0 after 80 minutes of regular play and two 10-minute overtimes, but ties are not allowed in state matches and MIAA rules dictate that the outcome be decided by a final best-of-five shootout. The Douglas Tigers won the penalty-kick faceoff 3-1, a heartbreaking end to one of the Lady Trojans’ best games of the season.
As of Tuesday, the boys had won all three of their playoffs—two on penalty kicks—and were headed to an MIAA Division 5 semifinal match against Gardner Tuesday night, Nov. 15, at Ayer Shirley Regional. During the regular season the Trojans lost to the Wildcats on penalty kicks, an outcome they vowed wouldn’t happen a second time. The boys won 4-1 and will face Sutton for the division championship on Saturday, Nov. 19.
Bromfield’s two cross-country teams are headed to their state finals as well, after placing among the top seven teams in the Division 3C qualifiers this weekend. The Division 3 state cross-country meets were scheduled to be held Saturday, Nov. 19, at Devens.
The Press has been following six Bromfield varsity teams this fall, and the Bromfield Acton-Boxborough rowing club. The winter season is almost upon us, when we’ll be tracking the boys and girls varsity basketball, indoor track, ski, and swimming and diving teams. Girls cross-country (5-0, 5-0)
- 11/12 MIAA Division 3 Wave 3C state qualifier. Sophomore Emily Wool was first among the 120 runners in her race with a time of 19 minutes, 59.7 seconds. The team placed fourth with 101 points among the 16 schools in its group.
