School Committee moves ahead with softball field plans

The School Committee, which earlier allocated $70,000 to get two fields ready for softball by next spring, has reached an agreement with the local company Three Seasons Landscaping for the grounds work. Three Seasons will work on improving the existing softball field on Ann Lees Road and converting one of the baseball fields on the Ryan Land to a softball field.

At Monday’s School Committee meeting, Chair Abby Besse said a first round of bidding on the grounds work brought in bids that were “way too high” at $68,000, given the other expenses in the project. But a second round led to Three Seasons’ bid of $44,000, of which $16,000 will go to the Ann Lees Road field, and $28,000 to the changeover at the Ryan Land. Besse said Matt Benway, who is both a member of the Parks and Recreation Commission and a softball coach, will do a walk-through of the lands with Three Seasons to go over the work.

Besse also said the equipment for the ballfields, such as batting cages and benches, is on order, and the costs came in somewhat under budget. The question of sheds for changing and storage at each field is still unresolved, she said. “The fields will be done for spring,” Besse said. “That’s the important thing.”
