I was disappointed to read that the majority of the Select Board had voted not to endorse Article 6 on the warrant for Town Meeting. That doesn’t show leadership on what I feel is an existential issue for this town. While enforcing this bylaw can appear problematic, this argument is a red herring. The real issue is whether our town government, under the guidance of state authorities, takes a stand for the commonwealth of its citizens by advocating conservation and yes, restricting nonessential water use during droughts. We need to move away from outmoded attitudes towards water use; that it is infinite and will always be around. What exactly is the right to water lawns, wash cars, etc. with impunity when at some point this shared resource might be exhausted? Just because it is deemed “hard to do” is no reason not to move forward with the hard work of living in a sustainable manner and away from the wasteful behaviors of a previous era.
