Two Bromfield athletes and the 4×800 meter relay team competed in last week’s Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Meet of Champions held June 2 and June 4 at Westfield State University Massachusetts. The Meet of Champions—formerly known as the All-State Meet—brings together the best athletes from schools across the state regardless of school size or division.
Sophomore Jack Stahl and junior Sam Secor and the relay team qualified for the event based on their performances at the MIAA Division 6 meet held the week before. In that race Secor placed third in the 800 meter with a time of 2:01.78 and Stahl fourth with a time of 2:02.92, roughly a second apart.
At the Meet of Champions on June 2 both boys beat their Division 6 times, running the 800 meter in less than 2 minutes for the first time in their careers. Secor’s time of 1:59.13 earned him 18th place while Stahl was right behind him with a time of 1:59.52, good for 21st place. Both were the fastest times for the 800 meter recorded by any Bromfield athlete since 2015.
Secor and Stahl teamed up with eighth-graders Harrison Binnick and Christian Johannesen to represent Bromfield in the 4 x 800 meter relay at the Meet of Champions as well. That team had finished third in the Division 6 meet with a qualifying time of 8:37.55. At the Meet of Champions on June 4, the team finished with a time of 8:37.32, the best recorded by any Bromfield team since 2009.
