The Hamilton-Wenham Generals lived up to their reputation as the number one team in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 4 girls tennis tournament, beating the Trojans 5-0 in the round of 16 on Friday, June 10, at Gordon College and bringing the Trojan season to a close.
“The Generals were very good, particularly in the singles,” wrote Coach Chris Holmes in an email to the Press. It was the team’s third loss of the season and the only match in which the team was shut out. “While disappointing to have our season come to an end, it was of some value to see how we stacked up against the top teams in the state,” wrote Holmes. “We have a ways to go to get to that level but are a very young team.”
First doubles Sarah Burns and Cassie Fisher had their first loss of the season, going into Friday’s match with a 10-0 record. They have been selected as Worcester Telegram and Gazette all-stars as the top doubles in central Massachusetts for 2022, and they are the first doubles team so honored since Holmes became the team’s coach.
Sophia Zhou, the lone senior who played against Hamilton-Wenham, was the last to finish her match on Friday. “Sophia played some really good matches during the second half of the season, with big wins against Hopedale and Seekonk,” Holmes told the Press. “We needed someone to step up and fill a singles position as the season progressed, and she did a great job as our third singles player down the stretch.”

- 1st doubles: Brynn McKechine and Nora Gamber (Hamilton-Wenham) defeated Sarah Burns and Cassie Fisher (Bromfield), 6-2, 6-1
- 2nd doubles: Lily Cassidy and Lisette Leonard (Hamilton-Wenham) defeated Nora Clarke and Khivi Nanra (Bromfield), 6-2, 6-3
