On April 16 I was burning a brush pile on our newly acquired land in Harvard. Unbeknownst to me an ember had landed in our beautiful nearby woods and started a significant brush fire. After a few minutes of futile efforts and panic of trying to contain it, I realized it was out of control and dialed 911.
The Fire Department showed up quickly, took charge, and had a few other towns join to assist. This was on a steeply sloped wooded site with little access, and yet they managed to contain a quite wide, rapidly spreading fire to a fairly contained area. As they got control of the fire, they and the EMTs turned their attention to me as I had received a few minor burns to my face and hands. They were more than kind and professional.
Our immediate neighbor Margaret Nestler, my wife Ellen, and I were all there watching the exceptional efforts and professionalism as the fire team completed their work. We three want to express our deep gratitude to all who worked on this fire, with special thanks to Deputy Chief Chuck Nigzus and Robert Curran. They and the team took a stressful and potentially dangerous event and controlled it, and showed concern for us as well. We three will never forget these efforts.
