The Bromfield girls co-op swimming and diving team placed sixth out of 28 teams at the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Central/West Sectional meet Feb. 13. The boys put up 24 points to land 18th among 24 teams.
The Sunday meet was held at Springfield College and brought together teams from across Central and Western Massachusetts to vie for a regional title. For many athletes it was also a final opportunity to qualify for the MIAA state meet this weekend.
Bromfield junior Lily Tonole was runner-up in the 1-meter dive. She put up 440.65 points to beat nine opponents. Haylie Calver from Minnechaug Regional High School won the event with 483.95 points.
Several swimmers also took top places. Ayer Shirley senior Lorelei Folger swam to third in the 200-yard individual medley and returned with another third-place performance in the 100 butterfly. In the 100 breaststroke, Ayer Shirley junior Sierra Quinty swam a personal record time of 1:13.14 to place fifth.
The Trojans three relay teams each swam season-best times. The 200-medley relay of Littleton sophomore Ella Bergeron, Quinty, Folger, and Ayer Shirley freshman Gracie Hanss placed fifth. Ayer Shirley junior Lilly Blouin, Hanss, Bergeron, and Folger banded together for the 400-freestyle relay, placing eighth out of 22. In the 200-freestyle relay, Blouin, Ayer Shirley freshmen Kiera Fallon and Niamh Fallon, and Bromfield junior Adaline Boissy were 18th.
On the Trojans boys team, Bromfield freshman Vance Petrossi swam two personal records and scored the team’s only points in individual events. He placed fourth out of 20 in the 100 breaststroke and 10th out of 17 in the 100 freestyle. Both performances qualified Petrossi for the MIAA State meet.
The season concludes this weekend at the MIAA state meet, where the top athletes from across Massachusetts will vie for individual and team state titles.
