As we explain in our story, Harvard citizens are asked to gather for a Special Town Meeting next Friday, Dec. 17, at 10 a.m. in upper Town Hall. Our townwide pre-holiday paper won’t be in residents’ mailboxes by then, so we’ve done our best to explain the need for such a late-year event in this week’s issue.
The meeting is required to correct a mistake in the amount appropriated by Town Meeting last spring for the current fiscal year. The Department of Revenue will not approve Harvard’s fiscal 2022 tax rate—lower than last year’s—until the mistake is corrected. And failure to vote a correction as soon as possible will cause headaches for taxpayers and town officials alike.
So next Friday, grab a mask and a friend or two and come to Town Hall to cast a vote for fiscal responsibility, and the town’s reputation for sound management of its finances. Then we might well ask: How will Town Hall ensure this never happens again?
