A team of students from the Bromfield School will be one of 16 competitors on season 13 of WGBH’s “High School Quiz Show,” an on-air academic tournament. This will be the fifth time Bromfield’s team has participated in the show; its most recent appearance was in season nine.
Billy Costa, the show’s host, will moderate the event from the WGBH television studio in Brighton, while teams of four will play remotely. Belmont High School, the defending champion, will return to the show this season.
The Bromfield team includes senior Olivia Ren, who is also the team captain, senior Julian Iverson, junior Sawyer Madison, and freshman Ewan Ward. Junior Lana Ostaszewski and sophomore Diesel Whitten are the alternates. The team is coached by Bromfield faculty member Kathleen Doherty.
In a press release from WGBH, Executive Producer Hillary Wells said, “‘High School Quiz Show’ serves as a dedicated space for sharing the joy in learning and the pride of sportsmanship.” She encourages people to support their favorite teams and watch the show in February.
To ensure a fair competition, questions cover literature, history, civics, science, and math as they align with the state’s high school curriculum. However, questions regarding current events or general knowledge are to be expected during the show as well.
Taping will begin in January 2022, and the show will premiere on GBH 2 and YouTube on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 6 p.m.
Bromfield will join the following high school teams as they compete for the state championship title: Andover High School, Belmont High School, British International School of Boston, Buckingham Browne & Nichols, Canton High School, Hopkinton High School, Lexington High School, Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, Mansfield High School, Mystic Valley Regional Charter School, North Quincy High School, Notre Dame Academy, Sharon High School, Shrewsbury High School, Westford Academy, and Weston High School.
