The cider barn at Carlson Orchards, a popular gathering spot for Harvard residents, will reopen Thursday, Nov. 18 after being closed for a few weeks to complete installation of a required fire suppression system. Owner Franklyn Carlson told the Press the system passed inspection earlier in the week.
The building had lost its temporary occupancy certificate when work to install the system was not completed by the agreed-upon Sept. 1 date. The town’s building inspector refused to issue a new certificate, saying sufficient time had gone by to finish the job. Carlson said one of the major causes of the date slip was the delayed shipment of a water pump.
The pump was finally delivered, the sprinklers and piping were installed, and the new building housing the three 5,000-gallon water tanks, necessary to supply water to the sprinklers, was completed. The cider barn will be open weekly during its normal hours, Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The barn will not be open on Thanksgiving day.
