The Harvard Council on Aging would like to say a big thank-you to the voters of Harvard for your approval of acquisition and renovation of the building at 16 Lancaster County Road to be the new senior center.
We deeply appreciate the challenging effort of the Permanent Building Committee and town officials who worked to secure the location and architect for the center, the support of the Capital Planning and Investment Committee, the Finance Committee, and the Select Board for bringing this article to the Town Meeting and ballot. We appreciate our Friends of the Harvard COA for their dedication and creativity in getting the word out to the community, but without the support of this town, our dream would have no chance of becoming a reality.
Our residents have supported the COA generously over the years. The programs and services would not be possible without a dedicated staff, donations of all kinds, a small army of volunteers, and the support of the town of Harvard. Because of the need for confidentiality, some of the programs and services provided by our outreach team are not well known by the community. One of the great needs our seniors have is the need for socialization to help combat anxiety and depression. It seems that social distancing will be the new normal for senior centers, and with our new space we will be able to offer more programs and events for seniors as well as intergenerational programs with the ability to properly distance people for safety yet allow them to be with their friends and neighbors.
The Council on Aging is always striving to offer more programs and services to assist the growing number of older people in Harvard and appreciates your vote so we can continue to support the town of Harvard for many years to come.
