A nonbinding, two-part question regarding the Bromfield House property will be put on the ballot of the upcoming Nov. 2 Town Election, following a unanimous vote of Select Board members on Tuesday night.
The first question posed to voters will ask if the town should sell only the structure at 39 Massachusetts Avenue and retain the land for future use. The second question will ask if the town should sell both the structure and the land to a buyer to be used as a private residence.
Rich Maiore, a member of the Select Board, said that the term “future use” might make voters uncomfortable. “I will not take the position one way or the other until we have a specific recommendation of what to do with the land,” he said, adding that presenting the questions as nonbinding is important when no alternatives are presented.
With the opening of a new school building last May, the school district’s administrative offices moved out of Bromfield House. An article that would have allowed the Select Board to sell Bromfield House and keep its land was rejected by voters at Town Meeting in May.
