A season to remember came to an end on a rainy, chilly Thursday as the undefeated (14-0 regular season) Bromfield varsity girls lacrosse team fell 12-10 to the Dover Sherborn Raiders (14-1) in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 2 state final at Alumni Field in Littleton. It was the team’s second trip to the finals in four years and capped a postseason in which the team outscored its opponents 53-10 in Central/West playoffs and then deteated Norwell, the MIAA South champion, 14-2 earlier this week.

Bromfield took an early lead and led 4-1 by the middle of the first quarter, but the Raiders punched back and by end of the third quarter were ahead 12-6. For the final 12 ½ minutes of the fourth quarter, the Trojans fought furiously to make up the deficit, holding the raiders scoreless and adding 4 points to their total, the last by senior co-captain Izzy Planchet following an interception by senior Liv Kehoe. With 52 seconds remaining, Bromfield called timeout, but it was too late. When the players returned to the field, senior Raider Annie Parizeau won draw control and Bromfield was unable to regain possession.

“This is magic,” Bromfield Coach David Planchet said after the game. “There are a lot of tears there, but there shouldn't be,” he said nodding towards his players, “They should be happy.” Two hundred ten teams start the season and two teams make it to the last day, he said, “So hold your head up.” He added: “Winning the championship would have been the cherry on top. But there’s nothing that's going to take away from how special this year was.”
