A state grant of $100,000 for summer school expansion will allow Harvard schools’ Summer Adventure program to serve a larger group of students and offer more academic support to those who need it.
School business manager Ingrid Nilsson sought the grant from the state’s Summer School Expansion and Engagement fund. In a letter dated June 25, the state announced the award.
Nilsson told the School Committee Monday the grant will enable Summer Adventure to provide additional academic programs for students at all levels of learning. The grant will also allow Summer Adventure to accept students from Transitions at Devens, a family homeless shelter, for the full seven-week program, instead of a limited number of weeks as before, including money for transportation costs and a food allowance.
Superintendent Linda Dwight said receiving the grant will let the schools preserve some money from the federal ESSER grants to cover the cost of replacing a middle school math teacher and an elementary school writing tutor. ESSER (Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief) grants are part of the federal COVID-19 relief programs.
