The Bromfield track and field teams faced Lunenburg High School last Thursday, May 27, for the fourth dual meet of the season. The boys won 85-60 and the girls were defeated 79-66.
The girls came into the meet undefeated and, while they couldn’t quite match Lunenburg’s depth, they certainly put up a fight on the field. Junior Patra Bonney and senior Alexandra Donahue were first and second in the javelin, throwing 77 feet, 8 inches and 76 feet, 2 inches, respectively. Sophomore Molly Squire was first in the shot put (26 feet, 2 inches) followed by senior Lauren Walling-Sotolongo in third (24 feet, 5.5 inches). Squire also claimed points in the discus, placing second with her throw of 75 feet, 4 inches, and Donahue was third with 66 feet, 1 inch.
Senior Dharma Cooper and freshman Grace Beckett vaulted to first and second, clearing 8 feet and 7 feet, respectively, in the pole vault. Senior Claire Stoddard took the top mark in the long jump (16 feet, 5 inches) and triple jump (32 feet, 8.5 inches), collecting all of Bromfield’s points for those two events. In the high jump, junior Pariss Eang Lee cleared 4 feet, 2 inches for third.
Stoddard, Eang Lee, and Squire also picked up points on the track. Stoddard won the 400-meter hurdles in 1 minute, 11.8 seconds; Eang Lee was first in the 200-meter dash (28.0) and second in the 100-meter dash in 13.5; and Squire was third in the 800-meter (2:37.8), which was won in a quick 2:23.2 by her senior teammate Hannah Beckman.
In the 100-meter hurdles, freshman Sophia Purcell was third in 19.7. Senior Marley Ferguson ran 1:07.3 for third in the 400-meter dash and seventh-grader Cate Corbett was second in the 2-mile in 12:50.2.
In the mile, eighth-grader Emma Squire was edged out by Lunenburg’s Elizabeth Clark in a battle for third.
The Trojans fell to the Blue Knights in the 4×100-meter relay (1:02.1) but won the 4×400-meter relay in 4:39.4.
The boys picked up their third win of the season, cinching a 25-point victory despite leaving the 400-meter dash uncontested.
The Trojans had things under control in the high jump and long jump, where the boys took all three scoring places. Senior Jack Yu cleared 5 feet, 2 inches in the high jump for first, and senior Angelos Psathas and junior Jacob Palito each cleared 5 feet for second and third. Freshman Colin Harte and Psathas jumped 18 feet, 9 inches for first and second in the long jump, and senior Jack Stahl was third with 18 feet, 3.5 inches. Harte’s 37 feet, 8 inches won him the triple jump as well, followed by Stahl, who took second with 34 feet, 3.5 inches. Senior Gavin Maddalone cleared 8 feet in the pole vault for third.
Bromfield snagged another 11 points from throws. Senior Nathan Woolcock took first in both the javelin (134 feet, 7 inches) and shot put (42 feet, 5.5 inches). Sophomore Liam Morrison was third in discus, throwing 85 feet, 9 inches.
On the track, senior Jordan Colon, Harte, and senior Cole O’Neil swept the 100, running 11.0, 11.4, and 11.6. Psathas won the 110-meter hurdles in 19.9 and Colon (23.0) and Palito (25.0) took first and second in the 200.
With no Trojans in the 400, Lunenburg swept up all 9 points there, but Psathas led the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.0. In the 800, sophomore Sam Secor was second in 2:15.6.
The mile came down to a close finish between Bromfield’s Stahl and Lunenburg’s Connor Martin, but Stahl’s 4:57.0 won him the event by three-tenths of a second. Sophomore Gavin Holt came through in 5:01.1 to fill in third. Seventh-grader Harrison Binnick snagged third in the 2-mile with 11:28.3.
The Trojans took both relays, running 49.7 in the 4×100 and 3:41.5 in the 4×400 to round out the day.
Bromfield was scheduled to race Littleton High School at Littleton Middle School the afternoon of June 3.
