After winning the Central Mass. Division 1 lacrosse championship last week, the Trojan girls began their quest for the 2021 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 2 Central/West title—and a place in the state tournament later this month—by taming the ninth-seeded Chicopee Comprehensive High School Colts 19-2 Monday afternoon at Harvard Park.
The Trojans had a ferocious first quarter, scoring nearly half their goals in the period—four within the final minute. “I thought our kids played with some intensity today,” Coach David Planchet told the Press after the game. “As I told them … they can’t take anything for granted, regardless of who the opponent is. They just have to outwork the other team. I was really proud of what they did.”
Bromfield dominated the field for most of the game, winning 21 of 24 draw controls, firing off 33 shots to Chicopee’s 11, and winning 30 of 52 scrambles for loose balls. By the second half, Planchet had pulled most of his starting players from the game, giving younger players a chance to gain tournament experience.
Seniors Isabelle Katter and Isabelle Planchet were Bromfield’s top scorers with four goals apiece—two flipped into the net by Planchet with nifty backhand shots. Freshman Kristin Podgorny scored three goals, while seniors Bella and Livia Kehoe and sophomore Julia Kimball had two apiece. Junior Megan Hoggins and senior defender Sophie Bartram each scored one. Thirteen of the team’s goals were scored with assists, demonstrating once again the players’ ability to work together. Junior Julia Mara, playing goalie for the first time, was credited with four saves.
Next up is a semifinal match against fifth-seeded Wahconah Regional High School (9-2) of Dalton, which was scheduled to be held at Harvard Park Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m.
