The top-seeded North Middlesex Patriots—home to four Bromfield co-op players—lost their CMADA Division 1 quarterfinal game to the No. 8 seed Shrewsbury Colonials, 6-3, in a surprise upset on the Patriots’ home field in Townsend June 10.
North Middlesex began the game with a goal scored five minutes in by senior Will McCarthy, assisted by freshman Joseph Williams. The Colonials followed up with a goal a minute later, scored by Shrewsbury’s junior Brady Soldo, assisted by junior Cam MacDonald. The next five goals were also Shrewsbury goals. Williams scored the Patriots’ second goal of the game, assisted by McCarthy, bringing the score to 6-2. North Middlesex freshman Shaun Highley scored the final goal of the game, assisted by McCarthy with four minutes left to play.
Bromfield freshman goalie Luke Maclean saved nine shots on goal; Shrewsbury goalie Matt Montoya saved six.
“We have put in the effort and worked hard this season, but today they won the ground ball game and had the longest possessions,” said Williams. “We’re focusing on bettering our strengths and improving our weaknesses as we move forward.”
With only four players signing up for boys lacrosse this year, Bromfield athletes are pursuing their sport as members of the North Middlesex/Bromfield varsity boys lacrosse team, the Patriots. Dallas Briggs-Adams, one of the four seniors on the team, is a long-stick midfielder and valued defender. Junior William Connors and Maclean work alongside each other, Connors as a respected defender.
They began their game season on May 4. Their record is 12-3-0, as of June 14.
Despite this loss, North Middlesex still has an MIAA-sponsored tournament to compete in. As of June 14, brackets have not been announced, but are expected to be shared sometime in the next week.
