The Bromfield girls lacrosse and tennis teams won their Central Mass. championship finals Wednesday afternoon, adding to the number of Bromfield teams finishing first in tournaments sponsored this spring by the Central Mass. Athletic Directors Association.
Earlier this week, the boys track and field team placed first at the Central Mass. District E Class C championships at Shrewsbury High School.
The undefeated Bromfield girls tennis team won its Central Mass. Division 3 title by beating Whitinsville Christian School 4-1 at Shrewsbury High. First singles player Leimalia Tratnyek and second singles Ally Weedon won their matches, as did the first doubles team of Sarah Burns and Cassidy Fisher and the second doubles team of Sophia Zhou and Holly Fisher. Second singles player Abigail Ames lost to Whitinsville’s Ally Weedon 6-3, 6-1.
Later that afternoon the girls lacrosse team won its Division 1 title by defeating Algonquin Regional High School for a third time 17-7 in a gritty game played at Littleton Middle School. Top scorers for Bromfield were Olivia Kehoe and Tallie Dutkewych with four goals apiece, followed by Bella Kehoe and Isabelle Planchet, with three, Megan Hoggins with two, and Isabelle Katter with one. Bromfield goalie Peyton VanDorpe was credited with four saves.
Both teams are headed to this year’s Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association sectional tournaments, which begin Friday.
The girls tennis team will compete in the MIAA Central Division 3 tournament, where they are the number one seed. The team was awarded a quarterfinal bye and will play the winner of the Friday match between No. 4 Whitinsville Christian and No. 5 Quaboag in a semifinal on June 21, at a location and time to be announced.
The girls lacrosse team will compete in the MIAA Central/West Division 2 championship, in which they are also the number one seed. They, too, get to sit out the first round of the playoffs and will play the winner of the first round match between Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Tech and Chicopee Comprehensive on Friday, June 18. That semifinal game will be played at Harvard Park at a date and time to be announced.
As for Bromfield’s boys and girls track and field teams, a total of 21 athletes—11 boys and 10 girls—will compete in the June 17-19 MIAA Central/West Division 2 state qualifying meet at Lunenburg High School for places at the big annual MIAA all-state meet scheduled for the following weekend.
