With only four players signing up for boys lacrosse this year, Bromfield athletes for the first time will pursue their sport as part of the North Middlesex/Bromfield varsity boys lacrosse team, the Patriots. They began their game season May 4. Their current record is 10-2-0, as of May 31.
Bromfield senior Dallas Briggs-Adams, junior Will Connors, and freshmen Luke Maclean and Thomas Diaconis are the current Bromfield players on the combined team. Practices and home games are held on North Middlesex Regional High School’s 1AAuto Turf Field, which is about a 30-minute drive from the Bromfield School.
On May 27, the Patriots celebrated their seniors with a ceremony after their home win against St. Bernard’s, 13-3. Graduating seniors include Bromfield’s Briggs-Adams and North Middlesex players Will McCarthy, Chris Borst, and Nick Diette.
On Monday, May 31, the North Middlesex/Bromfield Patriots secured their 10th win of the season against the Bedford Buccaneers, 10-3, on the Buccaneers’ home field at Bedford High School.
High scorer for the day, North Middlesex freshman Shaun Highley, earned two hat tricks. He began the game with four goals in a row, the last one assisted by freshman Joseph Williams. McCarthy earned the Patriots’ fifth goal, assisted by North Middlesex freshman Mason Schultz. McCarthy then went on to assist Highley’s fifth goal. Schultz got his first goal of the game, assisted by McCarthy. North Middlesex sophomore Jimmy O’Keefe scored the Patriots’ eighth goal of the game, unassisted. Highley reached his sixth goal, giving him a total of two hat tricks. McCarthy scored the final goal of the game for the Patriots, ending it 10-3.
The Buccaneers were credited with three goals, scored by Bedford’s Kenny Nichol, Bobby Marcus, and John Robinson.
Maclean, the Patriots’ goalie, was credited with saving five shots. The Buccaneers had two goalies play. Bedford’s Hugh Gilroy saved two shots. Bedford’s Ryan Cohen saved 15 shots. Highley, who took the faceoffs for North Middlesex, won six out of 11.
McCarthy, a team co-captain, reached a milestone of 100 points after the 10-3 win against the Buccaneers. When asked about the team’s performance, McCarthy said, “We kept our heads and came together in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Everything is just flowing very well [this season] and we’re excited to try and make some noise in the state tournament this year.”
Currently, the date of the upcoming state tournament is unknown, but it is expected to begin sometime in the next two weeks. Details and information about the schedule can be found on the North Middlesex Regional High School website under the athletics tab.
