Reading about ice skating rinks in Harvard brought back fond memories from our own skating rink built in the early ’70s in the “slough” of Slough Road. This rink had lights around it for night skating and a warming hut with a wood stove to recover from the very cold winter nights, all built by John. (There were no kits available then.) Our two teenage boys were joined by their younger sisters in “family hockey” with the Van Wormer family, but the girls were not allowed to join the teenagers’ night games, as our daughters were not in the same league as the older boys and their friends.
There were many evenings with the sound of clashing hockey sticks or cheers when a team scored. Although this happened decades ago, that memory is one of the best times at our family home on Slough Road, and we are so pleased to read that ice hockey continues to make memories in the yards of different homes.
