The Bromfield swim team maintained its winning streak with a 125-44 win against Nashoba Regional High School last week. Bromfield took first in every individual event as well as all three relays, and Coach Amy Gothorpe said her athletes are only getting better.
Swimmers from Bromfield’s team, which also includes athletes from the towns of Littleton, Ayer, and Shirley, hit the pool Jan. 23, but due to coronavirus precautions, Nashoba swam Jan. 30. Seniors John Babcock and Ella Church and junior Lorelei Folger were all big point contributors last week, each winning both their individual events and two relays.
Babcock took first in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.08 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute, 16.01 seconds, and Church won the 200 freestyle (2:00.03) and the 500 freestyle (5:19.12). Folger claimed first in the 200 medley (2:19.60), seven seconds ahead of the next competitor, and followed that up with a much narrower victory in the 100 freestyle (58.06), hitting the wall just three-tenths of a second ahead of sophomore teammate Tate Brown.
Brown later had a win of his own, claiming first in the 100 backstroke (1:11.50), and junior Zachary Becker finished first in the 100 butterfly (1:04.95).
It was a good day for Bromfield’s relay teams as well. The all-boys 200 freestyle relay (1:53.03) of Brown, Babcock, and sophomores Eli Labbe and Alex Myles beat Nashoba by seven seconds. Brown, Church, Folger, and Becker won the 200 medley relay (2:01.10) by over 12 seconds, and Folger, Babcock, Becker, and Church returned to close out the day with a final, 34-second win in the 400 freestyle relay (4:01.75).
Bromfield swimmers swept in two events, taking first through third in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. In the former, Church was followed by sophomore Lilly Blouin (2:20.82) and eighth-grader Sam Becker (2:24.96). In the latter, Zachary Becker paved the way for two sophomore teammates who finished within a second of each other: Sierra Quinty at 1:12.83 and Jack Babcock at 1:13.34.
“[The] team is getting stronger each week and the swimmers are really pushing each other, especially at the meets,” wrote Gothorpe in an email to the Press.
The swim team is awaiting results from its matchup against Grafton High School, which it faced on Jan. 30, and will have its final dual meet of the season against Westborough High School Feb. 6. The season will culminate a week later in an intersquad meet Feb. 13.
