The Bromfield swim team claimed its second win of the season (92-78) on Jan. 16, this time against Tantasqua Regional High School. The co-op team—composed of swimmers from Bromfield, Littleton, and Ayer Shirley high schools—won two relays and took first place in four of eight individual events.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Bromfield sophomore Tate Brown, Littleton senior Ella Church, Ayer Shirley junior Lorelei Folger, and Bromfield junior Zachary Becker took first in 1 minute, 59.53 seconds. The same four returned for the 400 freestyle relay and claimed a 16-second win with their time of 4:04.31.
Church and Folger lost no matchups this week, each winning both their individual events as well as the relays. Church was first by about 12 seconds in the 200 freestyle (2:03.38) and just edged out Tantasqua’s Ethan Korenda by 16-hundredths of a second in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.53). Folger’s time of 2:22.00 in the 200 medley earned her her first individual win of the day, but didn’t stop her from dominating the 100 butterfly (1:02.32) later on.
In an email to the Press, Coach Amy Gothorpe noted the importance of the team’s six fifth-place finishes that swept up crucial points to help the team edge out Tantasqua. These points were claimed by Ayer Shirley sophomore Lilly Blouin in the 200 freestyle (2:25.63), Bromfield senior Abby Boissy in the 50 freestyle (0:29.27), Bromfield sophomore Jack Babcock in the 100 butterfly (1:15.00), Bromfield freshman Ryan Donahoe in the 500 freestyle (6:59.26), Bromfield junior Courtney Clark in the 100 backstroke (1:16.52), and Ayer Shirley sophomore Sierra Quinty in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.70).
Bromfield eighth-grader Sam Becker had a notable performance in the 500 freestyle, claiming a personal-best time of 6:23.69 and second place.
Because of changes to the sport due to COVID-19, boys and girls scored together as one team and there was no diving event.
The team competed again on Jan. 23, but since coronavirus precautions mean teams compete separately—sometimes on different days—results from the matchup against Nashoba Valley Regional High School will not be available until later this week.
