The state reported six new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Harvard for the week ending Jan. 19, which brought the town’s cumulative number of confirmed cases since the pandemic began to 90. To date, the Press has verified that two residents and two residents who moved away from Harvard just before the pandemic began died of complications from COVID-19.
Statewide, during the week between Jan. 12 and Jan. 19, confirmed cases increased by 31,628, far lower than the previous week’s increase of 42,841. There were 473 COVID-19-related deaths during the week ending Jan. 19, down from 532 the previous week.
On Jan. 18 the number of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 in the state was 2,213, slightly down from 2,219 a week earlier. The number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units also decreased from 451 to 432. Locally, 17 patients were hospitalized with the virus at Emerson Hospital on Jan. 18, one of whom was in intensive care.
In the week ending Jan. 19, the Bureau of Prisons website reported 77 active COVID-19 cases among inmates at the Federal Medical Center in Devens, down from 95 the previous week. The number of active cases among staff decreased from 19 to 16. The website reported that one inmate died of complications from COVID-19 in the week between Jan. 12 and Jan. 19, but no press release has yet been issued with the details. Since the pandemic began, 310 inmates have recovered, 45 staff have recovered, and eight inmates died, six in the past month.
