In response to last week’s article advocating for townwide 5G deployment, I’m writing to encourage deeper research into the issue. That decision could come at a tremendous cost to all of us.
Wireless technology operates through the transmission of microwave radiation. It entered the market without long-term safety testing. The newest generation, 5G, utilizes millimeter waves of extremely high frequency bands. These bands can travel only short distances, therefore requiring the installation of hundreds of thousands of small wireless transmitters across the country. Transmitters will be mounted on telephone polls and street lights directly in front of our homes, schools, etc. They will, essentially, be placed at the whim of the industry. Due to a recent ruling by federal authorities, most decisions will be beyond the control of local boards. 5G will lead to an enormous increase in radiation exposure for everyone.
There are thousands of independent studies that confirm biological harm to our health and our environment. Scientists are finding health effects at levels hundreds of times lower than even the current legal international limits. Children are especially vulnerable. Because children today are the first generation that will experience a lifetime of exposure, we won’t understand the implications of exposure for many years.
In anticipation of the recent federal changes to 5G municipal guidelines, cities and towns around us are taking action. Burlington established a 5G committee, consulted experts, and established protective bylaws. Keene, New Hampshire, Easton, Connecticut, and others have declared a moratorium on 5G. Scientists around the globe are calling for a halt to the 5G rollout until we understand its effects on human health and our environment.
In many ways, advancing technology improves our lives. It’s our obligation, however, to advance responsibly and understand the implications of our decisions. While we may not fully understand the effects of cumulative exposure, we know there is clear evidence of harm. I sincerely hope this letter will serve as an invitation for readers to learn more about the risks of 5G and how we, as a community, can protect ourselves, our children, and our environment.
