I would like to thank Epiphany Vera for sharing his story with us. It reminded me that four years ago while on hospice my husband was taken care of by a man from Ghana who lived in Worcester. The gentlest, kindest man I have met. He worked a 12-hour shift overnight. He did not have an auto and was dropped off at 9 p.m. each evening. In the morning he would walk to Dunkin’ Donuts to connect with his ride. I think of Harvard as a safe town and thought our police would not harm him, but I always worried about him because he was Black, especially because he liked to walk on side roads and not Ayer Road all the way. I offered him a ride every day, but he refused, saying he needed the exercise and fresh air. That was probably true after sitting up all night making sure that my husband was well taken care of. I wish I had not had to worry, but I did.
