I am writing in support of Kara Minar for Select Board. I first had the opportunity to work with Kara when we co-chaired the 2016 Master Plan Steering Committee. During the final stages of that endeavor she pushed for a workable document that would be followed, and not put on the proverbial shelf. While on the Select Board we have worked together on the Harvard-Devens Jurisdiction Committee. In these various collaborations I found Kara adept at seeking the facts and data to inform our deliberations. She will withhold her support of a decision until she is sure it is reasonable and justifiable.
She also is mindful of the needs and concerns of our senior residents and retired employees. In the case of the former, she knows the hardship a tax increase will cause to their fixed incomes.
Similarly, she is aware of the hardship changes in post-retirement benefits (particularly health insurance) have on our retirees. She constantly looks for alternatives in meeting our ever-increasing budget challenges while minimizing their impact on these two particularly vulnerable groups.
Balancing her quick and sharp mind are her easy manner and ready laugh. Being able to disagree and remain friends is a necessary skill for committees to successfully function and one that is often underappreciated.
Kara brings these—and many other—talents to the Select Board. I urge you to join me in voting for her on June 23.
